One of the Happiest Farm Dogs in Kansas
Meet Magnum. Named after the Case IH tractor, Magnum is 100% farm dog, through and through. Probably one of the happiest farm dogs you’ll ever come across, this seven-year-old yellow Labrador greets everyone who visits with a big “bow-wow!” and allows them plenty of time to pet him in return. Magnum loves farming and his happiest days are spent with his owner and best friend in the whole wide world, Hayden Heigele, on his farm in Longford.
“He absolutely loves four-wheeler rides on the farm,” Hayden said. “He will sit by it because he doesn’t want to miss the chance at a ride. We’ll come in for lunch, and when we head back outside, he’s still sitting right there. Doesn’t even move an inch — just ready to go on the next adventure.”
When Hayden goes to check on the crops or fix fences, he always brings Magnum along. In the fields, Hayden looks for pests or weeds and Magnum goes wild, running up and down rows, feeling the leaves brush past him and scaring up birds. He barks with gusto at all the birds bursting out of the plants and chases them until they get too high. He seems to particularly enjoy running through wheat and soybeans, especially when they’re short enough for him to poke his head up and look around.
While Hayden fixes fences, Magnum enjoys bounding through the pastures, smelling all the new smells and, despite Hayden telling him “NO,” making a beeline for the muddy ponds. After cooling down, he trots back to the four-wheeler, hops in and plops his wet head onto Hayden’s lap. Then they move along to the next pasture.
Despite the occasional soggy jeans, Hayden couldn’t imagine being on the farm without Magnum.
“He is always doing something funny, and makes for a great companion,” Hayden said, giving him a scratch behind the ears. “He is the best helper anyone could ask for!”
