Sunflower Honey Bread

Sunflower Honey Bread recipe

This delicious bread is light and fluffy. Bring the taste of Kansas to your table with this recipe. It's made with some of our state's major goods, including sunflower seeds, wheat flour, vegetable oil (which can come from corn and soybeans, honey and dairy products (which typically comes from a farm within 300 miles of the store).

Ingredients

  •  2/3 cup warm milk
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sunflower seeds (You can use raw or roasted, but we don't recommend salted seeds.)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Tip: When measuring honey, do so after measuring the oil, as this will keep the honey from sticking to the spoon.

Directions

  1. Combine the milk, oil, honey, sugar, salt, yeast, oil and egg in a bowl. Sift in the flour and sunflower seeds. Mix until the dough starts to pull away from the sides of the bowl.
  2. Place the dough into a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  3. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  4. Once doubled in size, place the dough in a lightly greased 8-by-4-inch loaf pan. Cover and let rise again until doubled, about 30-40 minutes.
  5. Brush the top of the loaf with melted butter and sprinkle sunflower seeds on top. Bake the loaf for 35 to 40 minutes. Allow to cool completely on a cooling rack before slicing or serving.
